Prof. Colin Butler delivered a keynote on "Dual Use and Planetary Ethics" on June 8, 2026.

Beginning with seven case studies on "dual-use" technologies, the lecture explored how technological advancements—such as fossil fuels, nuclear energy, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and geoengineering—drive civilizational progress while simultaneously posing profound risks and ethical challenges. Prof. Butler reminded us that technological achievements should not lead to overconfidence, let alone blind us to the inherent vulnerability of civilization and the vital importance of planetary ethics. This lecture provided profound insights into reshaping our understanding of global civilization, technology governance, and the shared future of humanity, leaving us with invaluable food for thought.
